In 2016, Health Canada made improvements to the food labelling for the nutrition facts table and list of ingredients. Following this publication, the industry has five years, until December 14, 2021, to comply with the new rules on the packaging of their products.
To approve the changes to the labelling, Health Canada conducted various consultations, in which the Weight Coalition participated, between 2014 and 2016, in submission of a brief, meetings and completion of forms. For the Weight Coalition, the new labelling has several positive points – for example, the grouping of the different names of the sugar in the list of ingredients – but also some weaknesses requiring that an eye be kept on them.
Additional consultations from Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency are ongoing in relation to nutrition claims, labelling on the front of packaging and modernization of certain regulations. The Weight Coalition is actively participating the consultations.
